The name refers to the goddess of the moon of Polynesian mythology (Avatea).
Rostral margin separated by concave margins. Supraocular spines present and acute, much shorter than rostral spine. Rostral spine long, much longer than supraocular spines (if present); rostrum without elevated ridge in midline. Carapace dorsal surface with ridges or striae, with scale-like granulated ridges; lateral marginal spines sharp and prominent; anteriolateral spine directed straightforward. Distomesial spine of the antennal peduncle basal segment long, reaching the end of article 2; distolateral spine of article 2 of the antennal peduncle short, terminating in the mid-length of that article. Maxilliped 3 merus truncate, with flexor marginal spine placed distally. Pereopods 2–4 dactyli with 1–3 spine-like setae on flexor margin. Propodus of male pereopod 5 without ribbon-like setae.
