From the latin grandis (great), suggesting that the species is rather large amoung those species which bear a brush of plumose setae on the chela of the fifth pereopod.
Carapace with numerous transverse striae usually granulate or tuberculate, bearing prominent gastric and cardiac processes; epigastric spines absent. Rostral spine stout, flanked by small supraocular spines. Frontal margins deeply concave. Lateral limit of orbit rounded. Anterolateral spine of carapace strong. Abdominal somites 2–4 strigose, with 2 elevated transverse ridges, each anterior ridge strongly elevated, bearing 2 well-developed submedian spines, tubercle-like lateral spine on somites 2 and 3, no lateral on somite 4. Telson incompletely subdivided. Sternite 4 with anterior margin straight transverse. Ocular peduncles depressed, corneas dilated. Article 1 of antennule with 2 distolateral spines. Article 1 of antenna with distomesial angle produced. Mxp3 ischium with distal spine on flexor margin. P1 short and stout. P2–4 dactyli curving, flexor margin with a few spine-like setae. P5 with brush of plumose setae on flexor face of chela, movable finger of male lacking barb-like process. G1 absent; G2 present.
